The Hotel Carlton reopened in May 2004 after a multimillion dollar renovation and is located just five blocks from Union Square, the heart of San Francisco’s shopping, restaurants, and theater district, and is three blocks south of the California Cable Car line that passes through historic Chinatown and the Financial District. The hotel can best be described as “international vintage” featuring eclectic and exotic touches from around the world that celebrate the joy of travel. One-of-a-kind treasures and cross-cultural pieces are placed throughout, such as tribal figurines, Oriental rugs, and carved furnishings.

In 2007, the hotel was certified a green business by the City of San Francisco. They have taken it two steps further, as they are now the first hotel in San Francisco to have solar panels and have become carbon neutral. They have shampoo, hair conditioner, and body wash dispensers in their showers so they can do away with small bottles. They also offer guests complimentary filtered water and have glass pitchers in every room for convenience. Their Zagat rated “excellent” restaurant, Saha, offers a sustainable menu for breakfast and dinner, with great vegan and vegetarian options. They offer a daily complimentary wine reception and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. The Carlton is pet friendly and 100% non-smoking.

The Carlton is now pursuing LEED Gold Certification which shows an exemplary level of commitment to environmental principles. The LEED for Existing Buildings Rating System helps building owners and operators measure operations, improvements and maintenance on a consistent scale, with the goal of maximizing operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts. LEED for Existing Buildings addresses whole-building cleaning and maintenance issues (including chemical use), recycling programs, exterior maintenance programs, and systems upgrades.
